Artist's Comments

This painting has been lingering on my hard drive for a few months now. It was commissioned by 2DArtist Magazine for the current issue (#41) as part of a tutorial.

I was given extreme freedom regarding the subject, as long as the final image worked for the article. So I chose to paint what I know how to paint best (or rather, what comes easiest to me): Characters from Convivium. If you take a look around my gallery, you should be able to guess who this is.

Anyway...

The city in the background is NOT painted. It is a photo taken in Rome several years ago, manipulated and partly painted over to work with the rest of the image. The reason for this is that several different techniques had to be incorporated into the afore mentioned article, and this was one of them.

And yes, I screwed up the perspective of the archways slightly.

Photoshop CS
+ close-ups: one | two | three | four
+ pesonal reference used for the figure
+ the embroidery took forever
+ original size is 20.503x14.547 pixels... *dies*

This is beautiful. I just read a tutorial on matte painting in The Advanced Photoshop Magazine the other day, and I'd love to be able to paint something like this. Both the background and the foreground is absolutely fabulous, and I cannot see much wrong with the perspective... :)

Don't let the bastards grind you down.

Very beautiful. The colors are really great, and the city looks completely painted, I would have never known you used an image! And I love the close ups, very detailed, beautiful work! :)

This is an excellent painting - very well composed - good colour choices and depth

Just because it is impossible now - doesn't mean it always will be.

It's beautiful; wonderful colour scheme! And like aberry89 says, I would neither never have guessed that it was a manipulated photo.

Wow, this is beautiful. The colours are really nice, and I wouldn't have noticed the slight perspective problem if you hadn't mentionned it. I am just taken away by this piece. Plus, that embroidery is... wow!

Lovely, as always :)

As for distorted perspective... pssh! The slight incongruities just make the painting more intriguing and spellbinding.

hello :) I'm currently starting to do digital paintings. I love your work. The details in this painting are awesome!
May I ask you how your Computer manges 20.503x14.547 pixels?! Mine gets incredible slow with just 3.543x7.872 pixels :/
Thank you very much for sharing your art!

Thanks. =]

Well, only the city in the background is a photo, the rest is painted from scratch. =]

Dankeschoen!
